Job description

We’re looking for a lead backend developer to join our team; someone who has had years of experience with PHP, has seen its evolution, and understands not just how to code but how to build and architect systems using it. We’re looking for someone who has leadership tendencies, who’s passionate and driven, gets stuff done, and isn’t afraid to ask for help. Team

The Qualification and Vetting team is responsible for ensuring that we build and maintain a quality control system to safeguard the quality of our trade network. The team drives big opportunities to improve our brand reputation and grow our volume on both sides of the marketplace and drive more hires by gaining more trust from homeowners in our tradespeople.

This is a product development team and consists of a Senior Backend Developer, Senior Frontend Developer, a UX Designer / Researcher and a Product Manager. A team of Agile Coaches assist the team alongside an Engineering Manager, UX Manager and Product Group Manager.

You will also be a part of a backend guild with other backend engineers across the company. Through that guild, you will help to ensure the high quality of the software by introducing new technologies, improving and setting quality standards, exchanging experience, and taking on more extensive cross-team backend initiatives.

Technology

Our backend stack consists of PHP 8.1, Symfony 5.4, MySQL 8, RabbitMQ, Redis, GraphQL, Docker and Kubernetes, all running on AWS.

Our frontend stack consists of ReactJS, NextJS, ExpressJS, Apollo Client, CSS-in-JS, GraphQL, Webpack, Docker, and Kubernetes. 

We keep a close eye on quality and make sure we test everything in an automated way with tools like PHPUnit, PHPStan, Phan, Cypress and Jest, all integrated into GitLab CI/CD pipelines.


Your role includes the following:

  • Lead a cross-functional team of developers in the delivery of high-quality, scalable software applications

  • Collaborate with stakeholders to define technical requirements and develop technical roadmaps

  • Mentor and guide team members in their technical growth

  • Architect and design complex, scalable systems

  • Ensure adherence to best practices in software development, security, and performance

  • Stay up-to-date with industry trends and emerging technologies

  • Provide technical leadership and guidance on the use of cutting-edge tools and technologies

Job requirements

  • Strong expertise in PHP

  • Experience with cloud computing platforms, such as AWS or GCP

  • Understanding of relational databases and NoSQL databases

  • Knowledge of microservices architecture and containerization technologies like Docker and Kubernetes

  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills

  • Excellent communication, leadership, and mentorship skills

Do you offer remote work?

You need to already be based in one of our office locations or be willing to relocate to one of them.

We have a hybrid-work policy, which means that it’s up to you whether you prefer to work onsite or feel more comfortable working from home. However, in some roles, we might be looking for people living in the same region. You can have a look at what locations we are active in via the button below.

Do you offer a relocation package and visa sponsorship?

Yes and yes.

For applicants relocating to our German or Dutch offices, we provide financial relocation assistance and step-by-step guidance to support you in your relocation journey.

We also provide visa sponsorship for our German and Dutch offices. Currently, visa sponsorship for the French office is not possible.

What does an interviewing process generally look like?

Our interviewing processes can slightly differ depending on the department. The three things that are consistent across every process are a talk with the hiring manager in the early phase of the process, a team interview in the middle, and a culture interview at a later phase of the process.
