What does the Platform Foundation Team do?

The Platform Foundation Team’s mission is to enable teams by developing the platform itself, along with authentication and authorization for users and services. Some things we’re currently working on:

  • Developing an event bus that can be used by teams to enable cross-service communication

  • Improving and scaling our Message Queue system that currently handles 90M asynchronous messages a day

  • Improving the security of our platform.

You’ll also work with our community of back-end engineers to help ensure the high quality of the software, for example by introducing new technologies, improving and setting quality standards, exchanging experience, and taking on more extensive cross-team backend initiatives.

Technology

Our focus is to produce high-quality, working, and tested code that not only keeps us happy and productive but also helps the business to succeed. Our development process has been honed through exploring various flavours of agile and we believe that our way of working helps us get the right things done at the right time.

Our core backend stack consists of PHP 8.3, Symfony 6.4, MySQL 8, RabbitMQ, Redis, GraphQL, Docker and Kubernetes, all running on AWS. In addition, we have services using Serverless, Aurora PostgreSQL and EventBridge..

We keep a close eye on quality and make sure we test everything in an automated way with tools like PHPUnit, PHPStan, Phan and PHP-CS-Fixer, all integrated into GitLab CI/CD pipelines.

Your role includes the following:

  • Collaborate effectively with the immediate team and the wider engineering team to deliver high-quality solutions for our users - the engineers themselves

  • Contribute to, maintain, and adhere to the company development quality standards and best practices with other backend developers

  • Be a present voice during product and technical discussions

  • Understand data and context that drive decisions

  • Be proactive in suggesting ideas, solutions, improvements, and offering help

  • Bring your opinion to the table and be respectful to others while engaging in productive discussions

  • Share your knowledge and experience with others and help them grow

Job requirements

  • Demonstrable experience developing web applications with PHP/Symfony

  • Knowledge of software design principles and backend application architecture

  • Experience with test automation tools and frameworks

  • Good communication skills and a collaborative & emphatic mindset

  • Exposure to agile and lean development processes as part of a modern team

Nice to have

  • Experience with GraphQL, GitLab pipelines, Kubernetes, and AWS

  • Exposure to Event Driven Architecture

  • Experience designing scalable, highly available and fault-tolerant services
